Dear people loved by Christ,

As many of you likely know, the City of St. Louis recently implemented Health Commissioner’s Order Number 1. It states that everyone over age five must wear a mask “while in indoor and enclosed public buildings and spaces, and public transportation vessels in the City of St. Louis.” While this new order does mandate the wearing of masks, it makes no mention of increased social distancing.

Ascension’s pastors, elders, and Ministry Council recently met to discuss what this new order means for ministry at Ascension. After prayer and thoughtful discussion, Ascension’s leadership is asking that masks be required at all indoor activities at Ascension—including worship, in accordance with the mandate. This decision was made with a desire to both obey the earthly authorities that God has put in place, as well as to show love for our neighbor and his or her physical well-being.

No other significant changes are being made to our worship practices, seating for worship, or Communion distribution procedure at this time.

Please note that masks will not be required for outdoor events such as, Ascension’s Saturday evening concerts on the lawn. As has been our recent practice, worshipers may eat and drink of Christ’s body and blood during Communion either at the chancel or in their seats.

We all likely have our own opinions concerning this most recent mask mandate. I pray that this issue will not divide us as a church family. I also pray that this issue will not be an opportunity for Satan to distract us from our mission of sharing Christ’s love—with each other—and with our neighbor.

The words of this weekend’s epistle reading from Ephesians 4:2–3 are worth holding in our hearts, as Paul speaks of “bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

Bearing with you in love,

Pastor Matthew Clark, Pastor
Pastor Matthew Kobs, Assistant Pastor
